Robin Chapman, a Norfolk Southern spokesman, said that “some fuel spilled, but an environmental contractor was called in to clean it up\u201d. \u201cThe cause of the derailment is under investigation by the Norfolk Southern Operations Department,\u201d Chapman said.<\/p>\n

Ironically at approximately the same time, a Norfolk Southern train stopped on the tracks beyond the Town of Halifax, but the two last cars on the train blocked the railroad crossing at the lower end of South Main Street, said Halifax Police Chief D. E. Martin.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe crossing was blocked at 5:26 p.m., and traffic was backed up 501 to Golf Course Road,\u201d said Martin. \u201cAnd on the other side of the crossing traffic was backed up to the stoplight at Mountain Road.\u201d<\/p>\n
Martin said he and Cpl. S. M. Comer redirected traffic down Cowford Road. He said the crossing was blocked for more than an hour before the train moved, and traffic was able to again use the crossing.<\/p>\n
There were no injuries reported at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n
