{"id":3680,"date":"2011-11-17T16:04:28","date_gmt":"2011-11-18T00:04:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gordon-elias.com\/blog\/?p=3680"},"modified":"2013-04-03T15:11:38","modified_gmt":"2013-04-03T22:11:38","slug":"massive-union-pacific-train-derailment-in-topeka-ks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gordon-elias.com\/blog\/3680\/massive-union-pacific-train-derailment-in-topeka-ks\/","title":{"rendered":"Massive Union Pacific Train Derailment in Topeka, KS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TOPEKA, KS &#8211; Thirty-two rail cars jumped the tracks in a massive Union Pacific train derailment in Topeka, KS on Monday, November 14, 2011.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3692\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3692\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3692\" title=\"topeka-ks-union-pacific-train-derailment\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gordon-elias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/topeka-ks-union-pacific-train-derailment1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"261\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gordon-elias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/topeka-ks-union-pacific-train-derailment1.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.gordon-elias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/topeka-ks-union-pacific-train-derailment1-300x163.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Union Pacific coal cars piled up like an accordion along the bank of the Kansas River in a 32-car train derailment on Monday, November 14, 2011 just northeast of downtown Topeka, KS.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more-->Topeka is located in Shawnee County, Kansas in the northeastern part of the state about 140 miles northeast of Wichita and about 66 miles west of Overland Park.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH VIDEO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><script src=\"http:\/\/www.kctv5.com\/global\/video\/videoplayer.js?rnd=941268;hostDomain=www.kctv5.com;playerWidth=492;playerHeight=285;isShowIcon=true;clipId=6454909;flvUri=;partnerclipid=;adTag=Video%2520Player;advertisingZone=;enableAds=true;landingPage=;islandingPageoverride=false;playerType=STANDARD_EMBEDDEDscript;controlsType=overlay\" type=\"text\/javascript\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The mishap occurred shortly after 11:00 p.m. on Monday when two trains were passing each other just northeast of downtown Topeka on a section of tracks that run along the bank of the Kansas River.<\/p>\n<p>The derailment site was just south of Highway 24 along NE Grantville Rd. near NE Goldwater Rd.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3690\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3690\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3690\" title=\"topeka-ks-union-pacific-train-derailment-map\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gordon-elias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/topeka-ks-union-pacific-train-derailment-map.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gordon-elias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/topeka-ks-union-pacific-train-derailment-map.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.gordon-elias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/topeka-ks-union-pacific-train-derailment-map-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-3690\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Map showing location of Union Pacific train derailment where 32 cars left the tracks in Topeka, KS just northeast of the city along the north bank of the Kansas River and Grantville Rd.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A 142-car eastbound Union Pacific train was on its way from Wyoming and was heading towards East St. Louis with rail cars loaded with coal when it passed a westbound train with 122 cars on a parallel track that came from Kansas City, KS and was on its way to Salina.<\/p>\n<p>A derailment ensued that caused 22 rail cars from the eastbound train plus 10 empty cars from the westbound train to leave the tracks and created a snarl of twisted metal and spilled coal.<\/p>\n<p>The website of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cjonline.com\/news\/2011-11-15\/32-car-derailment-sends-shockwaves#1\" target=\"_blank\">Topeka Capital-Journal<\/a> carried an article on the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The article recounts the experience of one witness, 61-year-old Michael Chavez, who lives on N.E. Grantville Rd:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Chavez lives on N.E. Grantville Road, which runs parallel to the railroad tracks. His house is just east of the derailment, and Chavez said it felt as if the residence shook for \u201ca good five or six minutes\u201d during the incident.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Fortunately, no railroad workers were injured in the mishap and no one in the area was injured, either. Also, there were no reports of any hazardous materials and no evacuations were ordered.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the derailment is not known at this time but railroad officials said that the tail end of the eastbound coal train jumped the tracks and hit the westbound train which caused the derailment.<\/p>\n<p>However, this is not an official explanation and the incident is currently under investigation. Investigators were requested to be brought in from Omaha, NE to help identify the cause of the mishap.<\/p>\n<p>The railroad brought in cleanup crews and heavy equipment to clean up the mess and re-rail the tracks. Crews and equipment were brought in from companies based in Kentucky and Texas that specialize in incidents of this type.<\/p>\n<p>About 1200 feet of track had to be replaced. Crews worked quickly to repair the damage.
