Author: COOKEVILLE, TN – On Wednesday, August 18, 2010 just before 9 a.m. a train derailed in Cookeville, TN due to flash flooding in the area. Four rail cars derailed in the incident. The train was operated by the Nashville and Eastern Railroad Corporation.
Train derails in Cookeville, TN due to heavy rains. No injuries or hazardous materials involved.
Cookeville is in Putnam County, Tennessee in the central part of the state about 103 miles northwest of Knoxville and 78 miles east of Nashville.
The derailment happened at the railway crossing at Fisk Road between Dover and Bowser, just north of 10th Street. Fisk road had been blocked in both directions and remained closed until crews could clear the tracks.

The train conductor did see water rushing beneath the track but by the time he tried to stop the train, it was too late.

Emergency crews responded and, fortunately, there were no reports of injuries in the mishap. The train was carrying sand at the time and there were no hazardous materials involved. There have been no evacuations in the area as a result of the incident.

It has been determined that the derailment was directly related to the heavy rain experienced in the area on Tuesday overnight.
