CARTERSVILLE, GA – On November 5, 2010 a CSX train hauling grain derailed in Cartersville, GA very close to a residential neighborhood. About 20 rail cars jumped the tracks in the mishap spilling grain and damaging tracks and equipment.

Cartersville is in Bartow County, Georgia in the northwestern part of the state about 42 miles northwest of Atlanta.

The derailment occurred Friday morning in a residential area near the intersection of West Felton Rd. and N Tennessee St. just south of the railway crossing on Felton Rd. The tracks in this run in between residential homes in the area.

Actually, the derailment was only within feet of private homes on Pointe North Drive. It was reported by a SkyFox 5 reporter that cars parked behind one of these homes was coated with some of the grain that spilled over onto them.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the mishap and no injuries were reported to any railroad workers.

According to CSX, the train was heading to Comer, Georgia from Flint, Michigan. There were two locomotives on the train and it was pulling 74 cars. Two crew members were on the train at the time.

There were no hazardous materials involved.

The railroad company brought in heavy equipment to clean up the damage. Several pieces of heavy equipment were being martialed along Felton Rd near the railroad crossing and a cul-de-sac at the end of Beaver Trail was being used as a staging area. One of the roads nearby was closed to traffic while cleanup crews worked to clear the accident.

The cause of the derailment has not been determined but the railroad company is investigating.
