PUEBLO, CO – A BNSF train hauling coal derailed in Pueblo, CO in a spectacular crash on Saturday morning, November 27, 2010.

Thirty-one cars involved in BNSF train derailment in Pueblo, CO on November 27, 2010.

Pueblo is in Pueblo County, Colorado in the southern part of the state, about 112 miles southeast of Denver.

The crash occurred shortly after 8:00 a.m. just off Highway 50 near the intersection of Baxter Road. The crash was caught on a surveillance video from a local business (see video below).

The crash was huge and one could see billowing clouds of smoke and debris being kicked up on the video. A news reporter on the video said that local residents in the area described the noise as “like a bomb going off.”

Thirty-one rail cars derailed in the mishap. There were 2 railroad workers on the train and fortunately, no injuries were reported and no hazardous materials were involved.

The 120-car train was carrying coal from Wyoming to Texas. The 40th to the 70th rail cars were involved int he derailment.

The derailment occurred over an area of about 6,100 feet of track and tossed rail cars and coal all over the place.

Crews had to work into the late hours to lift the derailed train back on the tracks.

Each coal car was carrying 200 tons of coal, but it is not known exactly how much coal was spilled in the incident.

BNSF says that it could take several months to figure out the cause of the accident.
