CSX Coal Train Derails in Manitou, KY

MANITOU, KY – On Saturday, December 18, 2010 A CSX coal train derailed in Manitou, KY spilling coal and causing heavy damage.

Manitou is in Hopkins County Kentucky in the western part of the state, about 6 miles northwest of Madisonville.

The mishap occurred just before 2:00 a.m. in the morning about 3/8 mile northwest of the railroad crossing at Columbia Schoolhouse Road (Highway 630).

Approximately 13 railroad cars were involved in the derailment. The cars were carrying coal at the time and sustained heavy damage.

The following day on December 19, railroad workers from CSX were dispatched to the scene to clear the wreckage and spilled coal and to replace sections of track that were damaged in the incident.

Some trees were adjacent to the section of track at the scene of the derailment and were knocked down by the rail cars in the accident. Tons of coal was spilled in the incident.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported and no railroad workers were injured as a result of the mishap. There were no hazardous materials involved according to reports.

Officials do not know the cause of the derailment. The incident is being investigated.
