Winfield is located in Cowley County, Kansas in the southern part of the state, about 43 miles southeast of Wichita.
The derailment occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on Friday in a section of the main line just north of the Winfield Fairgrounds near a railroad siding.

According to officials, there were no injuries, no railroad workers were hurt. There were no hazardous materials involved and no emergency crews had to be notified.
The rail cars were hauling a load of taconite from Superior, Wisconsin to Eagle Pass, Texas and the route passes through Winfield. Taconite is a type of sedimentary rock that contains iron and is used to make steel.
In the mishap, only two of the 11 cars that left the tracks remained upright and the main line was damaged in the incident.
Crews worked fast, though, and the siding are was cleared within 12 hours.
The siding tracks were used to temporarily divert rail traffic around the derailment while crews cleared the wreckage and repaired the damaged tracks. Repir crews worked over the weekend and were able to get the main line repaired and reopened by Monday, December 27, 2010.
Some clean up work still had to be finished during the week, however.
