EASTON, ME – A train operated by the Montreal, Maine and Atlantic Railway (MMA) derailed in Easton, ME on Sunday, April 24, 2011.

Easton is located in Aroostook County Maine in the northeastern corner of the state near the U.S/Canadian border about 283 miles northeast of Portland.

There were 5 cars that derailed in the mishap just off Station Road. One of the cars was carrying wafer board and the other four cars were carrying number 2 fuel oil – a petroleum distillate used in home heating.

A state Hazmat crew was called in as a result of the accident. There were no reports of any evacuations or injuries as a result of the hazardous materials spill. Fortunately, no railroad workers were injured in the mishap.

An oil and hazmat spill response team from the Maine Environmental Protection Agency were called to cleanup the fuel oil spill.

Workers from the railroad company were also called in.

The reason why the 5 cars jumped the tracks is not known at this time. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the derailment.
