The driver, 44 year-old Alando Hawkins, got out of the truck before the crash and was not hurt. The truck belonged to Atlanta Foods International and was traveling westbound on Cherokee heading towards Main Street at the time of the accident.

Hawkins was cited by Police for failing to heed a crossing signal. The tracks lay on a steep hill and a sign is clearly posted prohibiting tractor trailers from crossing the tracks on Cherokee St.

The CSX train was traveling northbound when it plowed into the truck. The truck’s tractor was not hit by the train, but the trailer got T-boned. The train was unable to stop in time to avoid the accident.

The container trailer was partly empty but some cargo was spilled on the roadway as a result of the collision.

Fortunately, no railroad workers were injured in the accident and there were no hazardous materials involved. Also, it was fortunate that the train did not derail in the incident and that there was no DUI and no alcohol involved.

About 3 hours later the 18-wheeler was cleared from the scene and trains were moving again, but the railroad company still had to make repairs to the crossing.
