According to NewsChannel 36, the two trains collided Tuesday, May 31, at about 3:38 a.m. in Mineral Springs. Both CSX trains were on the northbound track. One was idle when it was hit from behind by the second train. Nine cars derailed in the accident.

NewsChannel 36 reports:

Union County officials said one crew member died at the scene and another died at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The names of the victims have not been released.

Two other crew members were treated at the scene.

NewsChannel 36 spoke with a CSX employee by phone. We’re told that the company is sending crews from their corporate headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida to Mineral Springs. Right now though, CSX says their focus is on the families of those killed, and they are not sure what caused the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
